young coconut

We have been having very hot days here in Oregon. One of the rare health drink to beat the heat is the juice of young coconut. It use to be hard to find these but in recent years I come across in most Asian stores including Korean grocery stores in my neighborhood.

While visiting Bangkok in December last year in a 100F day we bought this ice cold coconut from a street vendor. I have since love it. The best part is you know it is clean.

Here in Portland I can often found them selling for just $1.50 - just ~$0.5 more than I paid in Bangkok.

the easiest way to drink it is to punch a hole on the top, and just insert a drinking straw

i never drink softdrinks so i didn't have a drinking straw handy at home - instead i punch 2 holes and pour into a tumbler

This one yielded about 3 small tumblers of juice.

after drinking the juice, i loped the top off with a chinese chef knife and scooped out the meat
the flesh is very thin and taste quite refreshing

To harvest coconut cream you have to buy the matured coconut which also can be found in most Asian grocery stores now. The cream is extracted from the flesh of the mature fruit.

  4. having the right tool helps. I use this Korean soup spoon and it has a nice long handle do it reach in there and get every bit. Funny that I am eating one as I type this.
