this and that - oregon jul 2015

I have been sailing a lot in recent days. Due to the El Nino conditions June and July has been unseasonably hot and very stagnant in the Pacific Northwest. With the luck of rare consecutive breezy days I took advantage of them whenever I could, and putting in as much time on the water as I physically could.
In the most recent trip I clocked in an average of 5 hours each day. That is a lot of sailing.

made with live scallop
this would shape up to be another great windsurfing day - Segelvergnügen

I have a number of sailboarding photos taken by a local photographer here. I am one with the racing number HR7 on the lime green sail and wearing a pink helmet. It was blowing modestly hard that day, and my sail was a 3.9 square-meter on my circa 55-litre board.

Alex from Dresden and I tossed to an excellent day of sailing- he was extremey lucky to hit 4 consecutive days of excellent wind during his short stay in the Gorge

something with wild black berries
improvised breakfast
king crab pasta
fusion breakfast
 salmon with cabbage
pork tenderloin with black berries

Olympic National Forest - i went there to meet a James Cook Freunde John
i always do the smoky frying outside, weather permits

fittingly it did drizzle in this PNW rain forest
an improvised recipe, with rice cooked in the stew - it is a bit like risotto
this is a great camp site by a small lake - often i am the only one; no facilities just the way i like

bad wine screw (left) and excellent wine screw (right)
it is all in the design of the screw
the Swiss Army knife is one I always grab
a Fiat Ducato based RV from Austria
the auxiliary water tank is one of many new equipment and enhancements underwent "sea trial"; all function faultlessly
auxiliary water tank removed for windsurfing gear storage
like protection of the king, the fool is here to protect the rubber o-ring of the valved fitting on the water hose
this is the vent hose quick disconnect fitting
may not be obvious - able to access the gear with only the right hand side door open is a great feature
i took one trip without the auxiliary water tank and i missed it a great deal; especially the comfort of knowing you have plenty of water as well as being able to see the amount left in the tank directly
auxiliary water tank stored in the garage when not in use
sturgeon steak with a wasabi sauce is a recipe i created long time ago cooking in the Vanagon Camper
i found this well made colander - you only find nice one like this when you are not actively shopping for one; you can only find these in Asian stores

this year Thailand rice output suffered from drought as well as political strife - i wanted to secure my 50-pound supply
this year we have record number of days above 90F; i would never thought i would install a water misting system
i want to make a big batch of boudin - they are great for quick energy snack while windsurfing

the hardest part of making boudin is gauging the right amount of salt for seasoning - the amount of rice and moisture content can vary greatly
this batch turned out to be a bit too salty
they will keep a long time in the freezer once vacuum-packed
i have been consistently one of the earliest to start sailing - and usually one of the last few standing at day's end
it was refreshing to finally been rewarded with cold wind which pack much stronger punches than warm wind
waking up to low 60s F mornings is very pleasant and i am usually the first to arrive; we call the early sailing session "dawn patrol"
 a single serving of boudin
eating the boudin off the casing certainly quality it as fast food made the old fashion slow way

sprinters are one of the most popular vehicles of choice for silent water sports
i took these photos of the spare tire carrier of the T1N Sprinter to restore mine - Airstream butchered it out to make room for the ill-specified and ill-designed generator
according to the parts diagram there are subtle differences in the piece parts for different wheel bases

another great day in the Gorge

one of my pastimes while camping is practicing German with free learning German podcast from dw.de; amongst many is Deutsch - warum nicht (German - why not?)

Since I begun my learning of the German language, I have found out so much more about the pervasive influence of the early German immigrants to America. I am now so acutely aware of words, names, and many cultural subtleties in which even German American decedents have little idea. Case in point, of the fifteen largest ancestries of American population, German ranks number one with a whopping 15.2%. Not one of Asian countries made the list.

top 15 US ancestries - 2000 census (linked to wikipedia)

making a curry lamb stew - with whole cardamons; increasingly i carry more and more spices in Brunnhilde

the little Korean butane stove (the Mini Ninja) is my most used equipment cooking in the wild; this is a setup to cook in breezy conditions; without the windscreen the cooking is impossible
if you search with the keywords "mini ninja stove" my blog posts are among the top hits; that tells you i have one of the very few of this great little stove
wet suit tan; i even have foot strap tan on my feet
