I posted a short clip of hummingbird slow motion video a few days ago. Today I have a chance to capture a few longer clips.
Hummingbird is unique to the Americas. Some migrate between South America and North America. There are some that are native to North America. Here in Oregon we see a lot of Anna's hummingbirds. Anna's are found between Southern California in the United States to as far north as Canada.
If you watch closely you can see they lap up the nectar with the tongue through the small hole of the artificial flowers on the feeder. There are both male and female in the video. Male's head and good part of the neck is covered by iridescent pink (only when the reflection from the sun is right). Female only has a much smaller spot on the throat only.
Anna's hummingbirds are one of the most tenaciously territorial creatures. They will defend their territory by fighting tooth to nails. I spread feeders around 3 side of my house so the weaker ones would have better chance. Hummingbirds feeds on insects. They drink nectar to give them a boost especially during the frigid winter days.
