asia trip - winter 2013 part 2

I have written a few posts on Lin Heung Lau 蓮香樓 and Lin Heung Kui 蓮香居. They are my usual place to go for morning tea (dim sum) whenever I visit Hong Kong.

i have been wanting to take this picture in my trip last year but they were doing renovation on the outside
steamed rice bowl with chinese sausage and chicken - asian chicken tastes much better than the typical counterparts in north america

fish balls (there were two in the serving)
rice wrapped in bamboo leaves with salted pork and salted egg yoke - it is disappointing

the sign in chinese is a wonton noodle place that i like near the central district
it was early morning; the office workers queue up for a quick bite to eat before heading to work in the central district

most of this food is not that good but the price is right
Heading over to the nearby street market the vendors are just preparing to open.
fresh tofu
i wish i can get these dough made of glutenous wheat flour here in portland, oregon; i had found similar ones from vietnam but they don't taste as good as the chinese ones
wish i can get my hands on these back home

i haven't seen these preserved oily olives since i left hong kong in my youth - this is great for preparing a fish dish
the man on the right is frying chinese bread sticks 油條 at this congee shop; i had ate at this shop in a previous trip but the congee there is not something to write home
it was early morning and the dai pai dons were preparing for the lunch customers
through the wall ventilators - why can't one get these nice and quiet ventilators in US is beyond my understanding
this community garden showcases chinese herbs use in food, drink, as well as medicine

there are a lot of elder citizens doing heavy labor in this city
the melons on the left are a specialty from harbin, china; they are incredibly sweet, fragrant and delicious
one of thousands of vegetable vendor dotted the city - this one attracts customers with low low prices

many of these money changers are the best place for currency exchange - much better deal than the banks which typically charge 2%; you want to do your homework and have a calculator ready
braised goose and red sausage with rice - this restaurant is one of the few that offers consistent quality food at very reasonable price, and a welcoming decor which is very rare these days in the city
their hong kong style coffee is not bad
a scene in one of many food courts in the upper floors of neighborhood market buildings dotted the city
 lunch time queues

the police is video taping a peaceful protest
a chamber music concert under the sun - it must be terribly uncomfortable for the musicians in the near 90F day
this is in the IFC building - i had purchased baguette sandwiches from them in london; the strange thing is there was none to be found here

in the apple store inside the IFC building - 7 weeks after the launch of the new iPhone 5S and there is no stock unless you had pre-ordered one weeks in advance
the photo does not capture the size and number of staff of this two story store - i was told by a staff that there were about 200 staffs on duty

this colonial era building on electric street intersecting oil street had always intrigued me - i was born on this street
i would leant that this was the hong kong yacht club during the early colonial era
it is now converted into a arts exhibit
this is one permanent installation in the court yard - i sat with one staffer and had conversation with him at length
some art installations inside

this is a street market in which the street trams runs through
the police and the health department staff are arresting a middle age man from the mainland because he spitted on the sidewalk; the accused is causing a scene in the hope that his public bullying (of the arresting officers) will save him from a hefty fine; it is very common to see these kind of bullying by roughnecks inland men and i have seen it in mainland china many times
these little oysters are from my parents' home town fujian in the mainland
so are these fat crabs with big claws - this market is in the fujianese neighborhood; the man being arrested spoke fujianese and he was rousing sympathy from the people in the market to avoid the fine
