This is my first overseas trip that I travel without my Thinkpad laptop and my Canon 7D DSLR. My Thinkpad had recently been infested with malware and the Canon 7D died due to a power delivery failure. While I spent a lot of time ridding the malware(s), I just do not trust the computer to use for my financial transaction without completely re-installing the OS from scratch. I brought with me my iPad, my new iPhone gold 5s, and an unlocked iPhone 4s. While I missed my Canon DSLR and a notebook computer travelling nearly 6-7 pounds of weight saving in my backpack is very liberating. I never leave them in the hotel so that meant the weight I carry on my back all day long. I do miss the great latitude of the zoom lens and decent DSLR instead of using the iPhone to take pictures. All the photos in the trip were taken with my 4s as it was the phone that I used with pre-paid sim cards.
a street scene in causeway bay
taking (that is not me) the elevator to the top floor of the sogo department store; for all the recent trips to hong kong i had never visited the store until this trip
as i hate shopping the visit is more to fill my curiosity of what hong kong people do if they have money
i do like this fan by panasonic - you simply cannot find high quality fans in the us and i have looked at thousands
noodle with fish balls and fish cake in one popular place - unfortunately i find with each successive trip the quality of food in hong kong had gotten worst due to the ever increasing real estate value
every stores that sell fish balls noodle that they make their own in the premise but most lie; the quality and integrity of this food is long gone decades ago alas; hell, i can make better ones in my home in the us notwithstanding my limited access to the "right" ingredients
this very popular wonton noodle shop in the central put up cutouts of michelin award publication deliberately to mislead unsuspecting consumers that the store receives an award; looking closer you would see it is just a advertising of michelin award program
in my first trip to hong kong i was looking for a decent wonton noodle; i was able to tell from the appearance of the soggy noodle this place as in "need not apply" category... yet it is packed to the gill with customers because of the cut throat low price and bigger portion
an architecture model of a building amid a garbage pile
an apple store in the causeway bay with people queue up for the newly released iPhone 5s; the staff came out and make it clear the folks waiting in line not to expect any 5s in stock - like in all the launch countries
my quest for a good bowl of noodles continued - i was now in shau kei wan (筲箕灣); faced with two adjacent store i toss my coin
nope, this is not the real mccoy - shame on me! the fish balls and fish cake sux and same as the noodles
disappointed i headed next door to the real thing
i could tell from the customers many are repeat customers
it is much better but unfortunately by now my stomach was stuffed
the soy sauce noodle was quite good
the fruit wholesale market in jordan; it had lot a lot of historical luster now and i suspect a lot of the city's fresh fruit distribution is no longer center here
cutting boards made of tree trunks used by restaurants and food markets; they are kept wet to prevent splitting
one of the best thing i brought with me - flip flops; a good pair of flip flops is very difficult to find even in asian cities; so liberating to ditch the shoes
seriously do you really need a land rover in this city? it is of course it is merely a status symbol like a rolex watch for telling time
I averaged 10 miles walk each day while in Hong Kong according to the pedometer app in my shining iPhone 5s that take advantage of the M7 co-processor. one afternoon i arrived at Yue Hwa Chinese Products department store. It is one of the few institutions in Hong Kong that had withstood the ravage of progress. My feet were killing me and my body could use a place to seat down. There are these massage products so I decide to try this top of the line massage sofa.
it made my body very happy after walking all day
this is a store that sold high end AV electronics but is long gone - yet the building looks defunct and the street signs stood still in time
in the nearby side street i spotted these greeting tributes for this "night club"; i remember this is one of the many dotted this area when i was a little boy
the sign of eastern night club over nathen road
when i was a little boy this night club attracted a lot of foreigners especially american navy personnel; it used to be on the street level but it is now upstairs so my curiosity gotten ahold of me to go up and investigate
i barely had time to snap this picture and immediately were greeted by an escort...
the elevator looks very dilapidated in the building where there are countless of similar "night clubs"
Heading over to the temple street, it was too early for the street to be in full swing. I came across this store that sells all sorts of aftermarket casing for iPhones. I have no doubt that Apple got the idea of the gold iPhone 5s from this Asian trend.
I saw a lady in the central district with a gold iPhone which I could spot from 50 meters away. It was not the more subdue gold (more of a champagne color) iPhone but one that look more of a lusty gold color.
the proprietor of the store will replace the case of your iPhone 5/5s with any case of your choice; i have to admit some are quite nice and original
i had been puzzled why the evaporate milk in the US does not taste the same as those in Hong Kong, these are from Holland while ones in US are local to US
more dim sum - this is chiuchow style dumplings; one of the many things they do well
beef tripe, pig skin, and pig kidney
the light color piece is pig kidney
vendor selling fresh water farmed fish - very popular in southern china
i came across what looks to be filming in the central district
it turned out they were filming a sequel to the transformers; i had read in news paper that the filming were sabotaged by underworld on location wanting to be paid
seeing the sewer gushing out where they are i was wondering if this was an act of intentional sabotage
a red camera - probably just one for filming the bonus material in the bonus material in the DVD
sign showing the traffic diversion for the filming
judging from the many out of place motorcycles i guessed the scene involves some motorcycle stuns
i like the coffee in this place
promotion posters for bank's pay with phone app
the star ferry that i was on had to give right of way to this cruise ship
also had to give right of way to this barge carrying cargo containers
star ferry docking - always fascinated me as a boy how it is done
didn't you cut us off just moments ago?
one of the many money changer shops inside chungking mansions; for best deal stay away from the ones at the entrance and comparative shop
these folks were in queue for buying desert (cookies and cakes)
