an dong market 安東超市 - part 2

While I have written and mentioned my favorite Asian grocery store before I didn't have the photos I want to use in the blog posts. I really like this store and I would hope with my posts would help the exposure of this wonderful and yet under-recognized Asian grocery store on the East side of Portland, Oregon.

An Dong market 安東超市was one of the few Asian grocery stores that I regularly shopped when I first moved to Portland in the late eighties. They open daily and only close, if memory serves, on Chinese New Year day.

An Dong Market
5441 SE Powell Blvd
Portland, OR 97206
Open today 9:00 am – 7:00 pm

the exterior of the store - there are plenty of on street parking, and you can park in the church parking lot behind the store
While there are bigger Asian grocery stores and supermarkets in Portland, An Dong beat them all hands down most of the time for my weekly grocery shopping. It generally has the best pricing, and the store works very hard to stock all sort of unusually and hard to find items from all over Asia (especially Southeast Asia). I especially like the selections of Asian vegetable here and typically have better quality due to the care the store takes.

Whenever I shop there I cruise through the entire store as you never know the new merchandise they just added. Finding new cookwares is always a delight for me.
note the coconut grater on the bottom of the photo
 lots of Asian cookwares

 the rice section

Chinese yellow chives - I always buy a bunch whenever they have it

they have a lot of Asian fruits especially when in season
this is my childhood favorite junk food - a popular (and considered premium in Hong Kong)  instant ramen

mango by the box at the best price you can find in town
cactus fruit at incredible low price and you can often find plantains as well as Asian bananas their flowers
you never know what you would find each week

 exotic fruits aplenty
where can you find fresh duck eggs from small farm in Portland?

they even have cactus leaves here
the best part of An Dong market is it is my one-stop shop in which I can always find everything I need (with the exception of seafood) for all my Asian cooking for the week; Rainier cherries (from Hood River) for just $2.59 a pound!
Even though it is located across the river on the East side I actually spent less time in my weekly shopping trip going there instead of shopping nearby my house. Yet I seldom have to venture to the NE 82nd street where the concentration of Asian stores are (I hate to deal with the traffic there).

I have no affiliation with the store other than being a very satisfied customer for over 2 decades. The store operates in low margin and provides incredible service and value to the customers and I just want more people who like to cook eat real food shop there.
