this and that - oregon sep 2015

just a rambling post

i made this Thai basil pork - ate with Thai jasmine rice and good quality Chinese sausage from Brooklyn, New York

i recently bought this 5-pound pack of Chinese pork sausage - from Brooklyn, NY
i love this Makita 4-stroke blower; it has underwhelming specs for how much it cost; but i know better about marketing specs
it put out a lot of air even at idle and is so quiet as well as being a gasoline miser; it is a real pleasure to use

another excellent day of end of the summer sailing in the Gorge - i used this 3.5 sq-m sail all day

the bitter end of a great day

having too much time on my hands waiting for weather to turn better for windsurfing, i surf youtube looking for harden offroad campers; i have seen some very impressive high-budget ones on the road; guess these are called expedition mobiles; some looks like they are ready for Armageddon

these are classic Cantonese home cooked dishes

i came across this strange thing at one of my many local Korean grocery store which I had no idea what it is; it is fernbrake - the fiddle heads of certain fern that is edible

i discovered the rear speakers wiring were swapped when Westfalia built Brunnhilde; one of my James Cook  Freunde also found the same with his NAFTA James Cook

it was a pain having to pull the Alpine head unit to correct this wiring error
in the process I also leant something that I didn't paid attention to - the power consumption when the head unit is turned off but with the IGN signal active, thanks to my NAFTA James Cook  Freunde John
When you switch off the Alpine head unit via it's own on/off function. The unit is in full bluetooth operation, and ready to respond to handfree call (both incoming as well as outgoing). It is also fully functioning for other streaming audio functions like music sent to the unit via bluetooth from a mobile device (phone, or tablet etc). Because of these it consumes about 150mA in this soft off state.

Alternately, if you switch off the unit via de-asserting the ING signal - as one would do in a normal installation when the ignition key is switched off. The Alpine head unit consumes only a few mA.

Do note that this is only of interest as in my case I added a toggle switch on the center console such that the Alpine head unit can be used without the ignition key. All this means is for extended time of camping, I should use the toggle switch to switch off the audio system to reduce high phantom current.

dawn patrol windsurfing session - the wind was building healthily - looking out from Brunnhilde

my nasty prank pulled on my sailing buddy with whom i trade barbs regularly - a rotting sucker fish i tucked into his windsurfing gears; needless to say he retaliated
i had this Gardina hose cart a long time in the wish list until one came up on Amazon's warehouse deal give me an additional 10% discount
very often Gardina products like this are returned because people cannot see the benefits, and rather think they are short comings - like in this case 1/2" diameter hose

the 1/2" hose is light and flexible and to my surprise it delivers good volume and pressure

for the first time using the car washing brush is effortless

Gardina's products are still made in Germany; they can do this because of excellent and distilled design to keep the manufacturing cost low (for the very high German wages) and yet deliver superb products
this brush is over 25 years old and still have most of the bristles - using it with the 1/2" diameter hose is much less tiring on the arm compared to the common 5/8" hose; the Gardina hose material is also more flexible especially in cold weather
it is counter intuitive that you want to wind the hose this way - with the aluminum foot in the direction you un-spool the hose so they cart don't walk
side by side with the over-25-year-old counterpart you can see many incremental improvements in the design
still more of these home-cook classic dishes - the steamed pork dish to the left has wild prawns; the short stubs of sausage are 1 and 1/2 link of Chinese sausages
i scored this 3mm wetsuit on the end of the season sale - love Promotion wetsuit products; this size fits me like a good glove; actually this model was not on sale but the Promotion store gave me a generous discount when I asked
new windsurfing harness arrived from a warranty replacement
beef noodle - street food style

bees hard at work in my Oregon front yard - no lawn
aways happy to see bees in my garden

and i cannot mention bees without also mention the hummingbirds that my garden has abundance of; the hummingbirds contributes to 95% of my household annual sugar consumption
this is a juvinile Anna hummingbird

wood BBQ oysters
