asia trip - winter 2013 part 5

In case you wonder why my posts have so many photos. To me my blog posts are substitute of online photo albums like flickr. I had used flickr briefly a couple of years ago but find it very unsatisfying. I also ran into size limit within a week unless I pony up and pay. Then I decided to start my blog using blogger and the rest is history. With thousands of photos I uploaded I have yet to reach my free (albeit I pay google with my priceless privacy) account limit.
With blogger I can selectively upload photos, write comments and contents of the post faster than I can rename each photo. When I first started using blogger, the browser based authoring tool would keel over if I try to upload more than 8 photos at a time. The tool has gone though a lot of enhancement since. Today I tried 120 photos in one shot and it suck them up without crash and burn. I was impressed how far the tool has come along.
I used to rename my photos based on the subject matter. With tens of thousands it became impractical quickly. With the blog post I can annotate ones that I want with remarks and this process is much easier and faster.

wing on and sincere used to be the two largest department store when i was growing up; both are now eclipsed by other newer entrants

in recent years hong kong's real estate value has gone to the stratosphere and many old eateries have closed; the lucky ones had made enough money to retire but many are; this is one of two wonton noodle specialty shops that i like

i usually order the small size so the noodle does not get soggy
this family chain of shop (there were about 4 but now there are only 3 left) pride themselves with their all shrimp filling in the wonton
this is the large size
the shops has a brief history of origin of wonton soup noodle
the staff wrapping shiu gow (similar to wonton but with mushroom, pork, and bamboo)
this is a shop that specialize in braised goose - they have a lot of folks waiting in line to buy the goose
some scenes from the dried goods shops in Sheung Wan; it is early morning

inside Lin Heung Kui 蓮香居 in sheung wan

this tragic car accident in which both young occupants were killed instantly; very similar to that killed paul walker and his friend
this is one of my favorite - pan fried taro cake and daikon cake
news of oranges that has been dyed with color to make them look better than they really are; there are all sorts of adulterated food schemes in china
one restaurant fad is sucking drinks from a bag resembles that used for intravenous bag
one of my favorite

Lin Heung Kui 蓮香居 is cleaner and tidier than Lin Heung Lau 蓮香樓 that is only about a mile away
the main lobby of Lin Heung Kui 蓮香居

hairy crabs are in season again

this is historic building of the long defunct food market in the central district

pint size police vehicle - i wasn't the only one taking picture of it

close up of what used to be the superior court during british rule - recently it was used as the legislative building but it is now being repurposed again
i cannot help to think of lipo as liposuction every time seeing this sign
finally the hong kong street tram company realize a lot of passengers can use a sign telling them which stop it is; only took them almost a century

amazing this building has remain intact
i had warmed up to panoramic pictures
must be one of the ugliest MB in the world - yes, dark purple
my elder brother went to this school
first time i ride in this brand new street tram - while it lost the old world charm it is significantly smoother and quieter
seeing this sign i then realize i had not seen a single fiat abarth - i would expect that it would be very popular in hong kong
happy valley - for the rich and famous and lucky minority who won
a plain jane fiat 500 - while i was in the look out for one i didn't see a single abath there
seeing the seeds on the ground i remember playing in parks in my childhood

this must be the nicest soccer field in hong kong - it is in the center field of the happy valley horse race track

a racially diverse construction crew - i chatted with the east indian who spoke cantonese
lawn bowling club

i came across this other mak's wonton noodle shop near Happy Valley i read about - i could not pass up giving it a try even though my stomach was full
it is a roomer shop with newer decor

while very similar each of the Mak's bowl of wonton noodle taste different
in my opinion this is the worst shop - the one i like the best located in Sheung Wan is now closed

only recently i began to realize a lot of meat in hong kong are imported frozen
this is a whole sale frozen meat shop but they sell to anyone
a toto wash toilet in the street where design firms and habitat product suppliers concentrate; only millionaires buy them there
this german roller cabinet door can be ordered with different dimensions

this modern furniture shop sells cheap (namely lousy) knockoffs of famous designs
it is legal to drink in public but not legal to be intoxicated
i really wish these modern man made stone tiles are more available in the US instead of the all too common rustic stuff

9 out of 10 of the fixture shops sell nice looking but not so well made products - few like this tells reputable high end brands
a typical renovation scene
a lot of Sprinters has this fiberglass roof covering to combat solar gain - they learnt from early land rover
plastic sheets adheres to glass
this shop sells safes and a lot of keyless entries

i really dig these airline carts sold as home funiture
ideal for use with a notebook or iPad when you feel like standing instead of seating
the price for this one is $3980 HKD - about $516 USD; i would pay that much if only i can get one here in the US
this is the only store that sell them
wan chai police station - it has been around almost as early as Britain colonized Hong Kong; it carries bitter memory of injustice suffered by my family in the early refugee days of the island colony
the less interesting front side

a lotus dealer

kitchen cabinet with big sliding doors with mechanism that hinges shut flush
one advantage of 220V is you can make electric instant water heater very affordable and small
while a lot of fixtures in this store looks nice and modern; most are cheaply made in china; my mom would say 好睇唔好食 (looks good but taste bad)
even franke is well regard high end brand, this one looks cheap - a lot of companies will make products localized to specific countries/markets

bowl type basins are nonsense fad

modern minimalistic tubs are in every showroom for the well to do
