i came upon this old shop that sells coconut ice cream
like most of the old school shops in this area it is spartan
the coconut ice cream is delicious - not too sweet which is what i like
locals wait in line for an economical breakfast - cheung fun 腸粉 (steamed rice roll)
you can still see these old buildings were quite comfortable dwellings during their prime, each with high ceiling and private balcony
this store sells nothing but cigarette
this vendor sells only salted fish
i was marveling this incense shop and taking some photos, the owner came up and struck up a conversation with me; he asked me to sit down and our conversation was only later interrupted by arrival of customers
unlike hong kong a lot of these shop owners have not turn hostile to curious visitors because of onslaught of tourism
amazing that the shop still sells kerosene stoves that use cotton wicks - my family used them until i was in my late teens
making a traditional kind of hard biscuit made with almonds, sugar, and lard
this row of quaint old residential houses is in the back alley
i am pretty sure these buildings receive special financial incentives from the government to maintain their characters
a rare filipino restaurant - it was jam packed with customers
a typical neighborhood park in macau
you still see children engage in simply games
strange name for a pet shop
neighborhood convenient store
a gold fish vendor with shop the size of an old london telephone booth
a lot of these type of neighborhood cooked food stores
macau residence get free garbage disposal thanks to the casino revenue
this is the harbor on the west side of macau - zhuhai is just across the water; i snapped this photo before the customs guard warned me that i am in a restricted area :-)
an old building that was a company that made fireworks
like hong kong, macau government uses a lot of Sprinters
macau's government establishment that sells dog racing lottery tickets
this noodle shop is located right at the macau/zhuhai border so the business is booming from the ever increasing visitors from all over china
a braised beef brisket soup noodle - i didn't set my expectation too high; at least the price is right
a lot of macau's residents get around with moped; and it can be difficult to get a legal parking
this is how often they are squeezed tight together
a very rare sight in the border crossing immigration hall with so few people; it was very early morning in a week day
this is what you see coming out of the border crossing on the mainland side
dinner on the mainland side
these are the deep water version of the little fish very common in these water; the little ones are often cooked with aged tangerine zests, or cooked in a congee
we had a bottle of baijiu 白酒 like maotai 茅台酒 without the sticker shock of the real maotai; this bottle is indeed quite good
i have never seen these parking spot indicator - it lights up green if the spot is vacant
the sensors that detects if the spot is vacant
red indicates the spot is occupied
the hotel that i stayed in - the price is right and is close by the border crossing
below the hotel is the long distance bus terminal - the electronic billboard showing the bus schedule and fees
this time i would fly out from macau's airport to bangkok
so nice to be flying out from a small airport for a change without the crazy and stressful travelers and security of a large airport
macau airport has free wifi
and even a convenience store without inflated prices
出前一丁 instant ramen was one of my childhood favorite junk food
even the flight was not that full and i have 3 seats to myself
