asia trip - winter 2013 part 9

The flight from Macau to Bangkok took about 2 hours. Air Asia has the best rate as long as you don't care for the free drinks other airline give you. Their young crew run a very tight ship in each flight. Meals are pre-order so there is no waste.

The down side of flying Air Asia is it uses the older Don Mueang International Airport. Getting from Don Mueang to where your hotel in Bangkok requires going though the worst of Bangkok traffic jam that flows with the brisk pace of molasses.

i took the government (as opposed to many private buses) bus which take me to the khao san road area.
If you ever want to get to Khao San Road from the Don Mueang international airport by bus, here is how. You want to take the government bus No. 59. By government bus it means it is the Bangkok public buses as opposed to many other buses operated by private owners in which some are operated in the grey as I understand. I found out this bus when I went to the information desk of the airport when use this airport the first time. The staff speaks very little English but they sure know Kao San Roard. She gave me a preprinted tiny piece of paper. To board this bus you have to walk out of the airport onto the adjacent main road (not in the bus terminal inside the airport). As soon as you are out of the airport walk to the left and you will see a bus stop. It is poorly mark but if you look carefully you will see a tiny sign showing No. 59 does stop here. Make sure you only take the orange colour only! The fare is ridiculously cheap that I cannot remember how much.

Your next challenge is knowing when you arrive. I want to tell you to be on the look out for the Democracy Monument but in reality it is easier said than done. Just politely ask the ticket lady on the bus you want to go to Khao San Road and she will tell you to get off when the bus arrives. Even if she cannot utter a half sentence of English she recognizes Khao San Road.

the bus normally would pass through the democracy monument where you can get off and a short walk to the khao san road; the peaceful rally and demonstration against the recently defeated amnesty bill stopped all the traffic from passing through
a budget dinner - i had dined here in my first trip

suffered from severe caffeine deprivation in my blood the next morning i went against my instinct and dropped into the starbucks nearby
i order a americano with extra shot of espresso - it is disappointing but my expectation was very low having experienced poor quality in starbucks all over asia
you know a lot of thais live on half this daily?
the most important commodity in thailand - crushed ice
the lock in my hotel does not inspire confidence
Bumming around the neighborhood I came across this eatery with creative interior decoration not in keeping of a cheap bite to eat. It would become my favorite place to go for breakfast almost every day during my stay. Soon I struck up conversation with the owner couple.
in my experience in Thailand this has to be the cleanest casual restaurant

the lady owner makes one of the best cup of espresso i tasted in thailand - yet cost lest than half what starbucks charges; and she made on a real italian commercial machine instead of the "idiot-proof" automatic machine starbucks uses
the owners told me the design and execution of renovation was done by an artist friend

this ice shop supplies a lot of businesses in this area - if your stomach does not do well with less than hygienic water or food be very careful drinking any drinks with ice; you will understand if you ever observe how crush ice is made, delivered, stored, and used

back again for my regular double espresso - she serves them in her collection of these wonderful cups which she hand carried back from chiang rai

this neighborhood has a collection of old british cars

i like the design of this fence
macho looking pint size motorbike - this one has a single cylinder 135cc 4-stroke

another hot bike with mean-looking custom muffler
i stumbled upon this district that sells electronics - it is a hobbyists heaven
this shop sells hundreds of electronic kits and microcontroller development systems
be careful next time you see this harmless monk - he may be watching every of your moves
there must be a thousand shops in this area that sells electronics and gadgets of all sorts

a lot of surplus parts for robotics - these two young boys are shopping for linear bearings

a lot of vendors has brightly lit high intensity LEDs and many blink in a dizzying uncoordinated light show; i wonder how many epilepsy suffers have passed out here due to seizure; even i suffer from a headache after a while
