brunnhilde's propane level gauge

Very long ago, I installed a Suburban water heater with electronic ignition which allows me to switch on/off at will without the need to go outside to light the pilot light, and turn it on. To complete making the propane system the next step is to install a remote propane level gauge in the cabin so I don't need to go outside, open the propane tank protective cover and visually check the level.

brunnhilde's transmission fluid service

The dripping from the transmission would force my hands to perform the oil service including changing the connector housing together with new o-rings to stop the leak. I bought this kit long ago but just never got around to carry out the work.

brunnhilde's brake service - part 2

I wanted to check I order the correct rotors with this not so accurate improvised caliper before taking things apart

brunnhilde's power window - part 2

The left hand side of Brunnhilde's power window regulator failed 10 years ago and I repaired it better than new. I had since anticipate the right hand side one too to fail, only a matter of time rather than if it would. During the unplanned trip to Upstate New York this July it failed while on this cross country trip. Like always, the window glass dropped to the bottom. That is a major security risk. I open the door card, raised the glass and use a piece of cable tie to hold the regulator lift mechanism up. A fix would had to wait until I return to the ranch.

brunnhilde's brake service - part 1

I took an unplanned road trip to Upstate New York to bring home a Lotus race car. Returning home while inspecting the tires which two had problems and had been replaced. I needed to make a decision if a complete replacement of the entire set or just buy 2 new ones. I took the opportunity to inspect the front brakes thinking they are likely more worn than the rear ones.

carbonara

My first attempt to make authentic carbonara. A very simple dish when you have got nothing left to eat.

mexican rice

I made this approximation of Mexican rice. Very simple with no fuss.

home made char siu 叉燒 - part 2

Each time I make char siu 叉燒 the recipe is different. Also I now make a big batch in order to save time and effort. I pack the extra in vacuum bags and store them in freezer until I need more.

dim sum style braised ribs 蒸排骨

I occasionally make this dim sum style braised ribs. While when served during a dim sum they come on a small plate inside a bamboo steamer they are not steam but rather braised. The steaming is only done to reheat and keep them warm.

brunnhilde's fresh water level sensor failure - part 3

When I discovered the new replacement of the water level sensor has one less step, I wanted to rebuilt the old one that failed many years ago. However as always I had to find the dissected piece parts and that was not easy since I moved from the city to the country. With tenacity I found them after turning the house upside down literally. I set out to rebuild one with improved design that will last longer than even the "new and improved" stainless steel tube. In my view, the stainless version is in fact worst than the original one with plastic tube because of the use of a cheesy plastic plug at the submerged end.

pork tenderloin served many ways

I had four pieces of pork tenderloin in cryogenic packages. These allowed me to have plenty of opportunity to refine the preparation techniques. I wanted to achieve the doneness without overcook it minutely. The center should has a hint of pink. As each oven is different and you also have to control the temperature and time.

LG multi-zone mini split heat pump - part 2

My initial vacuum test purge was not good. I could not pull much of a vacuum and soon I realized I have many flare joint leaks despite I took time and care to make and tighten them. How I hunted down and corrected all of them is too complex for me to spend time to write.

LG multi-zone mini split heat pump - part 1

This is a job that I would not trust any professional HVAC people to select, design, and install. I want a cost effective way to heat and cool the cavernous barn. Unlike one for the main house it is designed to be undersized to make the place more comfortable while work is being done especially in cold winter.

fancying for a plush truck - part 2

Finally I received the delivery in October. I had only taken it for a short test drive in the scenic roads and a trip into town to have the snow tires mounted onto the dedicated set of wheels. The barn project is keeping me busy as I have been solo DIY since late May 2020.

a tale of a compressor

For the barn this time around I want a decent industry quality compressor. I also want one that have generous CFM capacity that can keep up with air tools. I searched for a used one and found one with a 3 phase motor on it and I jumped on it since I know I can invest in a single phase motor of same horsepower. It is a monster built in USA with all domestic parts, so bringing it home requires some care and muscle and care.

the barn at the ranch - part 5

The building site preparation requires significant amount of fill to be brought in. The county requires the foundation to be tested by a certified geo-engineering firm. We have the engineer came and inspect the fill that we plan to use, which is shale and he had to sign off on its use.

external entry gate opener

The ranch has two entry arches and with gates. One is the external entry into the property, and the other is the inner gate to fence out the deers where the main structures, lawns, flower beds, and the orchard are. Only the inner gate has a powered opener. The external gate has none as there is no electricity there. The only viable solution is solar powered.

the barn at the ranch - part 4

These photos are from October of 2020, when I first begun to plan for "the barn". The utility company came and reroute the 7.5kV electric feed between the power pole and the step down transformer. I had to pay for the cost of this work, so the building site would be ready for ground breaking.

the barn at the ranch - part 3

These photos are from July of 2020 when I started out to plan for "the barn" utilizing the open piece of land South of the house and other buildings. I wanted to maximize the square footage given the constraints. Still that cannot be accomplished because of the underground buried 7.5kV electrical power feed to the property cutting diagonally across the site.

the barn at the ranch - part 2

These photos are from mid July in 2021 when we first broke ground for "the barn". I could not get the contractor to start work until then, and the steel building would not be delivered until mid October which is very late in the construction season here in the PNW.

hambaagu - Japanese hamburger steak - part 3

I thought I would write a post of how I assemble a serving of the Japanese hamburger steak. I made 6 cooked petties which gives me six serving. My technique is what a restaurant would use. Everything is prepared ahead of time, and when the order comes in a dish is served up in very little time. This dish is quite complex if you try to make it from the start to the end. The idea is to take advantage of batch processing on the most labor intensive parts.

hambaagu - Japanese hamburger steak - part 2

I am not sure if there are many material difference between this batch and the last batch I made. But like most things, practice make perfect by fine tuning the techniques and explore the envelope. Next to no carb is what I like about this dish.

fancying a plush truck

I have decided it is time to buy my first pickup truck since now I live in the country. While my 26 year-old Land Rover Discovery still have a lot of drivetrain life left it is very outdated with poor MPG. Its best redemption is its capabilities under the worst of winter conditions on and off roads. The worst aspect is it is very tiring for a 6-hour round trip to Portland for my shopping trips.

little clay pot rice - still more variation

Blog is dead. No one read blogs anymore. It is all social and videos now. The reason I continue my blog is the photos that I take alone do not adequately document some of the subtleties especially when it comes to food preparation. Sometimes a few words of annotations help me remember years down the road of the progress I make over time.

sound pressure meters

I have this Radio Shack analog sound pressure meter a long time. It was the most cost effective at the time as the next step up would be professional equipment that cost close to $1000 circa 25 years ago. The main shortcoming of it is it measures only down to 60 dB.

dan zai mien - Tainan shoulder stick soup noodles

In every trip one of my unwritten goal is to bring back a culinary inspiration. Often in the form of a dish or food preparation techniques. The dan zai mien - translated to "shoulder stick soup noodles".

hambaagu - Japanese hamburger steak

Hambaagu is one of many Western dishes that was introduced to Japan, and Japanese adjusted to their tastes and sensibilities.
